What was your role in this project?
Shed were appointed by Liberty to design a temporary store at Battersea Power Station, running from October to December. The challenge was to bring to life the LBTY Fragrance brand, designed by Pentagram, showcasing 8 signature fragrances and gifting. The approach was to create an immersive experience beyond retail that is recognisably Liberty.
What were some of the inspirations behind the concept?
The idea of utilising one of Liberty’s iconic assets, the original store itself, was central to the concept. So much of what resonates in the hearts and minds of Liberty’s customers is intrinsic with the building and cues from the Tudor vernacular of the architecture helped establish the design.
How did you incorporate the influence of two very different, equally iconic buildings (Liberty and BPS)?
The coming together of two London icons, felt like a seminal moment worth celebrating. The stage was set for these two contrasting architectures to shine by simply staying true to themselves. We didn’t try to reference or adapt the LBTY concept for Battersea, but rather let the heritage and Tudor craft stand out against the impressive industrial back drop.
Were there any unique challenges to this project that you had to overcome?
Creating a customer centric experience with a focus on the fragrances when the backdrop is the scale of the Turbine hall.
How (if at all) did the fragrances themselves inspire the space?
The personality of the fragrances was a huge inspiration for the design. With each product born of a classic Liberty print, we wanted to celebrate each unique colour palette and pattern through layers of paper florals and oversized prints. Once inside the installation, it’s these elements that draw you in and invite you to discover each fragrance. We saw the Tudor architecture acting as a kind of terrarium for the fragrance garden within.
Do you have any personal favourite elements or areas? Anything that you're particularly looking forward to seeing brought to life?
The central underlit showcases and the fragrance scent funnels, we’re looking forward to seeing it all come together.
